Midnight Gate Short Stories Volume 2 Mike Driver edition by Mike Driver Literature Fiction eBooks

The eight stories in this short collection have all been previously published by various magazines and such, which is always a good sign, especially when I recognize a couple of the publications.

1) “The Magic Cabinet”- A ten-year-old gets a magic kit for his birthday. He’s so thrilled with it he ends up making it his life’s work. A decade later, he meets a young lady on a cruise ship, who becomes his assistant. Their act takes off and then, in an attempt to make it even bigger and better, he takes a risk that changes everything.

2) “Brian’s Closet”- Orla James is at home having her coffee when she’s startled by what sounds like a lion’s roar, so loud that it shakes the lamps. Once it passes and she gets her wits about her, she cleans up the spilled coffee then heads downstairs to check on her son, Brian. More than one surprise awaits us.

3) “The Informer”- Jenny Blythe is on a train, curiously sneaking glances at another passenger because he seems weirdly furious. The man gets off at his stop, and Jenny picks up the cheap gossip magazine he’d left behind, called “The Informer,” the one he was reading when he became so incensed. It turns out to be a very unusual and personal magazine.

4) “Poppets”- Hubert Callow walked home with his library books, ashamed of his choices and wondering if God was watching. He cringed when the usual group of children were there to pick on him, in between tossing around their battered dolls and stuffed animals. Then he encounters the man who is even worse. Since God won’t step up and handle it, Hubert decides to try.

5) “Now Wash Your Hands” – A widow misses her deceased husband and thinks she sees him washing his hands in the restroom. But, of course, that’s not possible. Or is it?

6) “Night Milling”- George Mason, a security guard at the grain mill, confronts criminals. Or does he?

7) “The Mistletoe Kiss” – A serial killer’s first victim was poisoned by Mistletoe. The victims all, male and female, wear electric pink lipstick hearts. Detective Bliss is on the case. Whodunit?

8) “Story of the Nereid” – A mother was nearly done in by a sea nymph years ago but convinced it wasn’t something she should talk about or that would be believed. Years later, she makes herself refrain from burdening her son with her fears, but perhaps she should have.

I’m not usually fan of horror but these stories are just deliciously creepy. They start with regular, everyday people in their regular lives, like they could be you or me or anyone. Then, something occurs… They remind me of the old scenes from The Twilight Zone. I highly recommend this book.

Midnight Gate Short Stories Volume 2 Mike Driver edition by Mike Driver Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Midnight’s Gate by Mike Driver is a collection of short stories that have been published in several horror magazines at one time or another. The tales within are a mix of spooky, paranormal events and a frightening display of the human psyche. If ‘The Informer’ doesn't get to you, then ‘Now Wash Your Hands’ definitely will.

Yes, I had my favourites and some of the stories were stronger than the others. But, if that wasn't the case then Midnight’s Gate wouldn't have worked as a collection. I did feel that the story, ‘The Mistletoe Kiss (A Hard-Boiled Bliss Mystery),’ wasn't truly connected to the rest of them, however. But, maybe it needed to be there just to keep the reader on his/her toes!

I have to admit, also, to getting ‘lost’ whilst reading a couple of the stories. I think that this was due to the fact that a definite hook was missing. I had to read those stories again just to be sure I understood where they were going.

There is no theme to the tales but, to be quite honest, I like it when there isn't rhyme or reason to something. Stories can be written just for magazine submissions and, as such, would all have different guidelines. It helps to prevent things from becoming too boring as well.

A collection such as this must still ‘fit’ together and the author has definitely achieved this. Well worth a read for all horror fans.
