One of the many things that set apart the written ministry of A.W.Pink is that dispersed throughout his writings there are powerful warnings to avoid having just a head knowledge of the living God.In the introduction to 'The Attributes Of God' there is an example of this "something more than a theoretical knowledge of God is needed by us.God is only truly known in the soul as we yield ourselves to Him,submit to His authority,and regulate all the details of our lives by His holy precepts and commandments."The author is most well known for his groundbreaking book "The Sovereignty Of God'. There is a chapter in this book on that aspect of God's character and Pink no doubt benefitted from what was written on this doctrine by previous servants of the Lord as this brief quote that he gives from C.H.Spurgeon will show :"There is no attribute more comforting to His children than that of God's Sovereignty.Under the most adverse circumstances,in the most severe trials,they believe that Sovereignty has ordained their afflictions,that Sovereignty overrules them,and that Sovereignty will sanctify them all."
To those who have some familiarity with some of A.W.Pink's books,you sometimes come across statements that perhaps when first read appear to be somewhat questionable.However,when reflected upon and considered in Biblical light they can rarely be successfully dismissed.In considering 'The Grace Of God' Pink asserts that it is not mentioned throughout the Word of God with reference to mankind in general(the mercy of God is thus mentioned,but grace and mercy must be distinguished from one another)but grace is only exercised towards the Israel of God,His chosen people,the Church,the elect.The author gives us three of the principles of Divine Grace:1.It is eternal-we are chosen in Him(that is Christ)before the foundation of the world.2.It is free-It cannot be earned or bought and it is not bestowed upon those who receive it because of anything in themselves.3.It is Sovereign-The Lord bestows it upon those whom He will.
In looking at 'The Wrath Of God' Mr.Pink observes that some think that it is not a profitable theme to reflect upon or that it is not consistent with God's goodness and mercy.If we are to form Biblical concepts of the Divine being we must consider the weight that the Bible gives to various aspects of God's being and nature.The author notes that there are more references in the Scriptures to God's wrath than to His love.He defines the Wrath Of God as :"it is the displeasure and indignation of Divine equity against evil.It is the Holiness of God stirred into activity against sin.It is the moving cause of that just sentence which He passes upon all evil doers." The wrath of God is part of who He is.As a result of that hell exists because His nature and character necessitate His retributive justice towards all that is evil in His sight.That is why the cross was a necessity.In order to deal with the sins of His people a substitute was essential.Those who have no substitute(will stand before God on their own and incur His wrath,which has been stored up as payment for a lifetime of wickedness).
A.W.Pink's 'Attributes Of God' is one of the classic treatments on 'The Doctrine Of God' that has been penned.It was never a book in the authors lifetime(it was taken from 'The Studies In The Scriptures')and first published in book form after his death.I believe it was first published as a book by The Bible Trust Depot in 1962.It is also part of the book Gleanings In The Godhead(published by Baker Books).The other half of GITG are articles from the Studies on the person of Christ(some of the richest material to be found on Christology).A testament to the usefulness of TAOG is that it is presently in print by five different publishers(six if Gleanings is included).

In a climate that dismisses God as irrelevant and archaic without proper understanding of who God is, this work is a corrective to give a basic understanding of the nature and character of God. On every page there is the corresponding understanding of how mankind is to respond to the truth of who God is. A much needed reminder of the character of the great God whom we serve.
Pink nails it - every chapter is like a breath of the crisp fresh air of God. Pink thoughtfully and concisely examines profound truths about the nature of God in a manner that stirs both the heart and mind.
Chapters are short enough (really sort of in-depth articles) meaning you can read with others or even incorporate it into a staff meeting as a weekly reading together for 10-15 mins.
What a great resource.
I also agree with so many who have said that Tozier's two volumes on this subject is better.
"The Attributes of God" is a deeply insightful work on the different characteristics( I hate to use this word but it is the best way I can describe them without using the word attribute) of who God is. Most people often focus on God being "loving" or one of "grace" or "merciful" and yet God is also "holy" "unchanging" and "just" who cannot stand to look upon sin. It is imperative for all Christians to understand that God is more than one characteristic and that unlike human beings, all of God's characteristics are on display at all times. The author does a wonderful job on providing scriptural backing of each attribute of who God is. I believe this is a must read for all Christians.
I love A. W. Pink's books. His humble explanation of God's Holy Scriptures is inspirational and informing. My husband and I have come to understand biblical truths and have a better understanding of The Sovereignty of God through Pink and the way The Holy Spirit guided him in writing. We buy his paperback books to give out to friends in hopes that they will gain a blessing from learning bible truths. This book and Pink's THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD are excellent starters in the search for truly understanding how God works in this life. I would recommend any of Pink's work.
Rarely do you come across a book on any of God's attributes, let alone so many of them, that is so rich in personal theology and yet concise in it's presentation. A.W. Pink incorporates scripture in his personal sentence structure and in so doing is able to offer a concise yet comprehensive exegesis of God's word, demonstrating a high view of the Lord in the process. I have given away dozens of copies of this book and hope that it continues to be available at this price.
A. W. Pink was addressing the issues of faith 75 years ago that pastors are afraid or simply don’t know! Pink’s economic use of words and plain spoken manner brings the God we worship clearly into more focus that the liberal Evangelical church is prepared meet!
